Frequently Asked Questions

Q:  How long does it take to get a bed?
Most beds are ordered and custom made in Sweden for the client so it can take six to eight weeks to get your bed.  Vividus beds can take an additional two to three months because of the increased man hours to make them.  Only six craftsmen are trained at Hästens to make the Vividus.
Q: What makes the beds different from each other and why are the prices so varied from bed to bed?
All of the beds have specific filling layers and the length and number of the springs vary.   The cost of materials and labor factor the pricing of each model.  The variations in structure create a unique feel for each type of bed, but there is no compromise in quality or support no matter what the price.
Q:  The bed feels very soft. Why is this?
We, in the United States, aren’t used to having beds that are made with all-natural material which is long-lasting and resilient.  Most beds in the U.S. are made with a thin layer of foam under the ticking and between it and the support springs.  This means there is little “cushion”.  Also, once the synthetic material used in “pillow-top” mattresses is compressed down it doesn’t come back up as does natural material so once again the soft cushion feel is gone in a relatively short period of time.
Q:  Will the bed sag?
Hästens beds don’t sag because of the resilient quality of the natural filling material used in layers between the ticking and coils, and the heavier gage, tempered steel that’s used for the coils.
Q:  What do we do if there’s an extreme difference in body size of two people sharing the same bed?
King size beds can be ordered split in tension. One side can be made soft and the other medium, or medium and firm.  The lighter the person the softer the bed should be.  Most people select soft or medium tension.
Q:  Do you have to flip the mattresses? How often?
Yes, the Citation, Continental, Excelsior, 2000T and Vividus mattresses need to be turned and rotated.  This should be done monthly the first year, quarterly the second year and every six months after that.  Frame beds (Superia, Excel and Naturally) should be rotated head to foot a couple of times a year.  The top mattress should be flipped and rotated when sheets are changed.
Q:  Can the pillows be washed?
Pillows can be washed in a warm, gentle cycle, and dried on a low cycle.
Q:  Are there other colors available besides the blue and white?
Yes, there are twenty different colors available including an all 'white-on-white' check pattern that can be used on the Vividus, 2000T and Citation.
Q:  Do I need any special sheets for my Hästens bed?
No, you do not.  You can use the sheets you already have currently.  We do offer sheets, pillows, comforters, mattress protectors, pajamas, and bathrobes in our stores.
Q:  Can I use my existing bed frame with my Hästens bed?
Of course you can.  As long as your frame is well made (no loose joints) and is built to American or European standards.  We also have legs for our Hästens beds should you need the extra weight support,  or you prefer a more European look.
Q:  What about my allergies and the materials used in Hästens Products?  I am allergic to animal hair?
It is literally impossible to be allergic to horsehair.  Hair, as well as nails, is dead cells so there is nothing to react to. You could however react to dander that is attached to the hair or fur of an animal.  For this purpose, we go through a strenuous cleaning process to make sure the horsehair and down is clinically cleaned.  The horsehair and down is certified by the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden to be hypo-allergenic.
Q:  Do you hurt or kill the horses?
Not at all.  Our horses are probably better treated than any horses elsewhere.  One of the many seals of approval Hästens beds are labeled with is the SWAN certificate.  A manufacturer is awarded this prestigious seal when this organization has found that a manufacturer has NOT disturbed nature or animals in the process of manufacturing its products.
Q:  If I have this bed for 50 years, would it not be full of mites and other undesirable things?
No.  This is a "dry" bed since air is allowed to circulate through the bed.  There is no foam or other synthetic materials in a Hästens bed.  Synthetic materials trap moisture.  Wool, cotton, and horsehair are all natural materials and allow moisture to evaporate.  Mites need moisture to survive, and thus this is not a problem even after 50 years.
Q:  Why is your top mattress (pillow top) not sewn onto the bed?
For three reasons:

1) If you should have a spill of some kind we want you to be able to take the top mattress off to clean it.

2) The top mattress typically gets matted down with time.  50% of our customers prefer that feel.  If you are in the other half, it only takes a few minutes to revive the mattress back to its new feel.

3) There is nothing that is better for all your bedding than sunshine.  In the summer, take all your pillows and blankets and put it out in your backyard and expose them to the sunshine.  This annual activity refreshes the textiles and the natural filling materials.  By having the top mattress loose, now you can actually also refresh a part of your bed.
Q: I have heard that the King of Sweden is sleeping on Hästens bed, is that true?
Yes this is absolutely true.  Hästens beds is the Royal Purveyor to the Royal Family of Sweden.
Q:  Do the beds have latex in them?  What does “natural latex” mean?
When you choose a Hästens bed, you can be sure it is free of foam rubber, polyurethane and latex.  Beds made with rubber products or latex have been treated with chemicals during the production process.  Natural rubber ages and becomes rigid and can finally crumble.  By adding chemicals to the raw rubber, the aging process can be delayed and the addition of synthetic materials such as polyester or polyurethane can extend the life length even more.  So, even though rubber comes from nature, the processing required to use it in beds is not so good for you.
